Flat Feet: Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Treatment Options

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, occur when the arch of the foot collapses, causing the entire sole to make contact with the ground. While some individuals are born with flat feet, others may develop the condition over time due to injury, aging, obesity, or tendon dysfunction.

For many people, flat feet cause no symptoms. However, others may experience foot pain, fatigue, swelling, or discomfort in the ankles, knees, and lower back due to improper alignment. Activities that involve prolonged standing or walking can worsen these symptoms.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and imaging if needed. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and symptoms. Non-surgical options include supportive footwear, custom orthotics, stretching exercises, and physical therapy to strengthen the foot muscles.

In more advanced cases, surgical correction may be recommended to restore proper alignment and function. With the right care plan, patients can relieve pain, improve mobility, and maintain an active lifestyle.
